Androscoggin Lake 2021 Water Quality Decline
- Become LakeSmart! Contact ALIC’s LakeSmart team to receive a FREE evaluation and learn how you can improve your property for the benefit of Androscoggin Lake: lakesmart@androscogginlake.org, and visit https://www.lakes.me/lakesmart to learn more about this state-wide program.
- Reduce or eliminate soil erosion on your property.
- Establish or improve vegetation on your shoreline. The bigger (wider) your shoreline buffer, the better it is for the Lake. Buffers trap stormwater and phosphorus!
- Stop using fertilizers on your lakefront properties.
- Maintain a healthy septic system, and pump your septic tank regularly.

Invasive Update
As you already know, variable water-milfoil has been found in the "Inner Cove" of our lake.
We are working with our own plant patrol team members and with other organizations indicated in my last message to fully determine the scope of the infestation in the cove. We will know more soon. I promise to keep you updated.
Our ability to communicate quickly and effectively both to all of our lake residents and community members of both Leeds and Wayne is vital to our effort. Please do share this message with your neighbors, and encourage them to go to androscogginlake.org/mailinglist to sign up for updates.

Invasive Milfoil found in Androscoggin Lake
On September 5th, one of the members of our plant patrol team collected a suspicious aquatic plant in the northern end of the "inner cove" (a few hundred feet north of the state boat launch) on Androscoggin Lake. The plant was turned over to the Lake Stewards of Maine (formerly VLMP). They sent it on to a lab for DNA testing. The results came back to us yesterday. Unfortunately, the plant has been identified as variable water-milfoil, Myrophyllum heterophyllum, an invasive species to Maine.
An early and quick response in determining the scope of the infestation is key to developing a plan for managing and attempting to eradicate this invasive.
We have formed a team of members from our plant patrol group (Eyes on the Water), our lake association (ALIC), the Thirty Mile River Watershed Association (30MRWA), Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM), and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to work together on tackling this problem. The first step in our plan of action is to conduct a full level 3 plant survey of the inner cove. We are planning to conduct this survey within the next week or two.
Once we know more, I will post another message to this mailing list. At some point down the road, we are hoping convene an online community meeting to provide updates and answer questions. We will also attempt to make updates available on our facebook page.
Next spring and summer, we will need to conduct an organized survey of the entire lake. If you are not already a member of our plant patrol team, please consider joining. We will need everyone's help in this effort.
