Welcome to Wayne
This is the official website for the Town of Wayne, Maine. We will use this site to communicate with our residents, businesses, and visitors. Wayne is small town situated approximately 20 miles west of Augusta in Kennebec County.
It is characterized by its picturesque waterways and rich historical background. With a population of around 1,129 residents, Wayne offers a tranquil environment that attracts both visitors and new inhabitants alike. The area was first settled in 1773 by Job Fuller, who initially named it New Sandwich Town.
In 1798, the town was officially incorporated as Wayne in honor of Revolutionary War hero General Anthony Wayne. The town’s scenic beauty is complemented by its numerous lakes and ponds, including Androscoggin Lake and Pocasset Lake, which offer ample opportunities for recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming.
In addition to its natural beauty, Wayne is steeped in history, with landmarks such as the Wayne Village Baptist Church and the Cary Memorial Library serving as reminders of its storied past. The town’s community spirit is evident in its annual events such as the Wayne Strawberry Festival, which brings together residents and visitors for a weekend of festivities.
